Frequently Asked Questions (Micropipettes)
Which volume ranges do the micoropipettes Transferpette® S, pro and electronic (single-/multi-channel) cover?
The Transferpette® S and Transferpette® pro cover a very large single-channel volume range from 0.1 µl to 10 ml, while the multi-channel models of the Transferpette® S typically cover 0.5 µl to 300 µl and the Transferpette® pro up to 1250 µl; the Transferpette® electronic offers, depending on the model, single-/multi-channel ranges of about 0.5 µl to 300 µl or up to 5 ml and, in addition, electronic dispensing programs for efficient, repeatable dispensing. Further details on available sizes and accuracy data can be found on the respective product pages at shop.brand.de.
What is the purpose of the finger rest label on the Transferpette® S and pro?
The finger rest label (label window) on the Transferpette® S and pro is used for clear, individual identification of your instrument directly on the finger rest; you can remove the window, mark the labeling film with your desired ID, and reinsert it. The label is commonly used to individualize pipettes, mark them for specific applications, or document the date of the last calibration.
Can the Transferpette® pipettes be autoclaved and what should be considered?
The Transferpette® S and Transferpette® pro are completely autoclavable. For the Transferpette® electronic, the pipetting subunit is autoclavable. We recommend sterilization in the autoclave at 121 °C, 2 bar for 15 minutes. Please observe the notes for the respective products in the user manuals in the download area of the product pages at shop.brand.de or at https://www.brand.de/en/service-support/downloads.
If the pipette is autoclaved frequently, the piston should be lubricated with the supplied grease to maintain smooth operation."
What are the differences between Transferpette® S, pro, and electronic?
The difference between Transferpette® S, Transferpette® pro, and Transferpette® electronic is primarily in the operating concept and functions: The Transferpette® S is an ergonomic, manual air‑cushion pipette with true one‑hand operation, a universal tip cone, and Easy Calibration. The Transferpette® pro combines all the advantages of the Transferpette® S with even more flexibility and additional options: a temporary “User Adjustment” for quick adaptation to changing conditions, extended volume ranges, and a rotatable finger rest for even more ergonomics. The Transferpette® electronic offers electronic programs (e.g., pipetting and dispensing) that conveniently enable multiple dispenses and complex dispensing sequences.
Which pipette tips are compatible with Transferpette® S/pro/electronic?
The Transferpette micropipettes are designed so that pipette and tip form a matched system. The pipette tips and filter tips developed by BRAND fit optimally and ensure the best tightness and performance. You can find the appropriate tips at https://shop.brand.de/en/liquid-handling/tips.html. A suitable selection guide can also be found on the product pages under “Selection Guide.”
Thanks to the universal design of the shaft/ tip cone, many tips from other manufacturers can also be used.
Can Transferpette® pipettes be DAkkS‑calibrated?
All Transferpette® pipettes can be ordered DAkkS‑calibrated with a calibration certificate. To order BRAND new instruments with DAkkS calibration, please prefix the corresponding instrument order number with ‘DAkkS/...’, e.g., DAkkS/7036 00 for a DAkkS‑calibrated Transferpette® ‑8 0.5–10 µl. Please refer to our current price list for the surcharge for your desired instrument.
If a calibration certificate is required for pipettes already in use, please send them to BRAND with the note ‘Calibration DAkkS‑accredited (ISO 17025)’. The order form can be downloaded at www.brand.de/service.
Are Transferpette® pipettes suitable for decontamination using UV light?
The UV resistance of BRAND Transferpette® pipettes is tested at a wavelength of 254 nm. Color changes may occur as a result of UV exposure.
At what intervals should Transferpette® pipettes be checked and serviced?
Calibration and maintenance of a pipette are recommended at regular intervals of 3 to 12 months. The exact cycle depends on individual requirements and the load on the instrument. In the case of heavy use or the use of aggressive liquids, testing should be carried out more frequently.
Maintenance includes not only volume testing but also a visual inspection of the tip cone, piston, and seals for damage, wear, or contamination.
Immediate maintenance is required if any of the following situations occur:
Liquid has entered the interior of the pipette,
the pipette drips when working with aqueous solutions,
pipetting is sluggish.
Detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and user manuals with maintenance notes are available at shop.brand.de or at https://www.brand.de/en/service-support/downloads."
What do the different colors/color codes of the Transferpette® indicate?
The different colors, i.e., color codes on the volume-setting wheel, shaft, and volume-change protection identify the corresponding volume ranges and support quick, error-free identification in everyday laboratory work; this helps users find the right pipette and compatible tips faster. The color-coded ranges are clearly presented in the tables on the product pages at shop.brand.de.
